March 16, 2009: Bike Ride Heroes!

Wayne Jordan, shown below, says he was inspired to start this annual ride to save babies' lives and says that's strong motivation when the seven day trip gets tough and tiring.

As seen on Bay News 9's Everday Heroes segment on March 16th, 2009: Five hundred miles on a bike, over seven days sounds like a long, grueling trip.

That's what three Pinellas County people are gearing up for, all so they can raise money to help young women facing unplanned pregnancies.

The fundraising idea came from Wayne Jordan, who then recruited his friends Cheryl McConnell and Brendon Fassett. They started with their first trip last year, with all their proceeds going to benefit the Pregnancy Center of Pinellas County.

The three avid bicyclists pedaled about 460 miles last year to the Keys, collecting $3,000 in contributions. The Pregnancy Center says it takes approximately $500 per young woman to counsel her, give her a free pregnancy test and sonogram and generally help them through their pregnancy.

Jordan says he was inspired to start this annual ride to save babies' lives and says that's strong motivation when the seven day trip gets tough and tiring.

This year the threesome plans to bicycle to Pensacola, almost 500 miles away. Their goal is to raise as much as they did last year, if not a little bit more.
